BAC
TRAINING
an enormous government investment in training
is required
BAC Training is a relatively recent BAC initiative. It
was created in April 2003 to specifically coordinate and
administer a large two year STEP (Structured Training and
Employment Project) and subsequently became responsible
for the organisation's broader training needs. When outside
funding ceased with the completion of the STEP contract,
the department was reduced to one half time position resourced
entirely by BAC.
DEWR requires Bawinanga
to move 60 CDEP staff into non CDEP jobs in the 2006/07
financial year. This in turn requires an enormous government
investment in training over the long term. Currently
most CDEP workers have poor levels of literacy and lack
many specific workplace skills.
The following structured
training programs have taken place during the year: a
firearm safety course to enable the rangers to apply
for a shooter's licence; computer courses - basic computer
operations for CDEP staff and Excel for all staff; tourism
training for outstation traditional owners so they can
better understand the requirements of the tourism industry;
accredited land management units delivered through junior
ranger camps, a joint school and ranger project; a two
day management course for all BAC managers delivered
by the Australian Institute of Management; training to
tag and monitor the movements of crocodiles; and training
to obtain a restricted coxswain's.
