BAWINANGA
OUTDOOR SUPPLY/ BUSH DELIVERIES
promising
new business
This is a new BAC enterprise which started trading
in December 2005 as part of an ongoing BAC commitment
to increase employment opportunities through the expansion
of the service industry. The retail industry in Maningrida
lacked a store dedicated to general outdoor supplies.
Stock includes camping gear, fishing equipment, ammunition,
boats and marine accessories, chainsaws, generators,
hardware and paint.
Initially sales were
slow but are now exceeding expectations as customers
have become aware of the range of goods available. Turnover
is currently running at $50,000 per month, a remarkable
achievement in such a short period. There is room for
further growth as stock lines expand in response to customer
demand.
chairman
reports members are now satisfied
In August 2005 Bush Deliveries began a fortnightly shopping
service for members living out bush. The Tucker Run had
previously been responsible for this role but with the
expansion of in town business found it difficult to continue
this service. In response to the members' concerns a
new enterprise was established to concentrate solely
on the needs of outstation residents.
. With the resumption of regular fortnightly deliveries
to all outstations, members' concerns have been allayed
and the Chairman reports there is widespread satisfaction
with the new arrangements.
Bush Deliveries and the new Bawinanga Outdoor Supply
are run as complimentary businesses sharing both premises
and staff. The bush shopping run however always takes
precedence as BAC views it as a core responsibility.
The pricing policy, same price out bush as in town, also
reflects the importance BAC accords this service.
Tighter stock controls and new procedures have been introduced
to contain the costs of delivering out bush (05/06 $92,569).
Members living on outstations accessible only by air
during the wet season must now order their goods so air
freight and handling costs are kept to a minimum. Delivery
is guaranteed regardless of the conditions as the BAC
helicopter is always available as a last resort.
Bush Deliveries has been deliberately designed so Aboriginal
staff can do most of the work themselves. Tasks which
Aboriginal employees often find difficult, such as administration
and ordering, have been simplified to enable Aboriginal
management. Present Aboriginal staff, under the leadership
of Brian Dickson, have the skills and experience to continue
this service themselves with some assistance with the
end of month administrative tasks.
