BAC
FUEL
need to
balance job creation and the bottom line
BAC Fuel sells fuel, basic groceries and snacks every
day of the week, and now opens till 8pm three nights
of the week. This service ensures customers are able
to buy the essentials when the supermarkets are closed.
BAC Fuel's market in snacks and basic food lines had
been eroded over the last few years with the decision
by both supermarkets to extend their hours and the
opening of a new hot snack service which operates similar
hours. In response to this, BAC Fuel has redefined
the shop's market, extended the trading hours and is
adjusting the stock lines accordingly. This has successfully
reversed some of the market decline suffered last year
with turnover in 2006 $2,871,541 (2005 $2,420,578).
BAC Fuel is a major
employer of CDEP staff with 12 currently employed and
a further two now moved to full time salaried positions.
One has been promoted to the position of supervisor for
the after hours trade. CDEP participation is booming:
$103,611 was paid in top up, more than double the amount
paid the previous year. The desire to encourage Aboriginal
employment must be balanced with the need to ensure the
business remains profitable. Consequently BAC Fuel management
will work to ensure staffing is kept at an acceptable
level and is adjusted to the peaks and troughs of customer
demand.
