 Women Rangers

The women rangers are involved in a wide variety of tasks which includes some overlap with projects which the mens rangers are involved in. These projects which the women rangers assist the mens rangers with include Fire Abatement, Weed and feral animal control and sea patrols. In addition to these tasks, there are a number of projects the women undertake on their own. These include:

Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) monitoring:

Women rangers collect the eggs and larvae of mosquitoes, fruit flies and ants which are then posted to AQIS for testing to check what species these insects are. This allows early detection of potential pests and invasive species that could devastate the Australian environment and agriculture.

Bush Tucker Collection:

The women rangers collect a range of bush tucker foods from the Djelk area including fruits and shellfish. Some of these foods are provided to the aged care facility in Maningrida so that elders can have access to traditional foods. Other foods are sold to the Northern Land Council (NLC) and subsequently on sold to bush food retailers. This is currently ongoing with the billy-goat plum (Terminalia fernandiana)

Seed collection:

The women rangers assist the BAC nursery by collecting the seeds from a range of species from the Djelk IPA area. These seeds and then propagated in the nursery and the plants sold around town or to nurseries or revegatation groups around the Darwin area.
