CRAB HARVESTING PROGRAM

BAC bought a commercial crab licence in 2004/05 with the objective of providing traditional owners with the means of earning income from their own country.
It was hoped that such a considerable investment by the Corporation would benefit many members but disappointingly only a few people, the initial team of Jimmy Olsen and Michael Anjerrmarr, have been working the licence. During the course of the year the Executive and Management will review commercial crabbing operations and explore the options available for this enterprise.

Crab Aquaculture
A small pilot project to farm crabs has been established in conjunction with DPIFM (the Department of Primary Industry, Fishing, and Mines) who provide technical support and equipment. The feasibility of this project is still to be established but it is hoped that if viable it may provide income for traditional owners.
